Why Did The Misfits’ Famous Font Appear on the Coachella Lineup Poster?

Each year, the Coachella lineup poster becomes a highly anticipated visual, showcasing the dozens of artists set to perform at the Indio, California festival. This year, fans were quick to spot a rare change: a band name printed in a different font than the usual Eurostile LT, sparking curiosity and excitement.

The band in question? The legendary punk rock group, The Misfits. Known for their iconic "fancy horror" font, the band's name was emblazoned in the distinctive oversized M’s, F’s, and T’s that are synonymous with their visual identity. This seemingly small yet impactful typographical shift honors the long-standing relationship between Goldenvoice and The Misfits, emphasizing their enduring influence on live music.

A Tribute to The Misfits’ Legacy in Punk Rock

For Coachella 2024, the band will be performing as “The Original Misfits”, signaling that the classic lineup will take the stage. This includes the iconic Glenn Danzig as lead singer and songwriter, Jerry Only on bass, and Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein on guitar. This reunion marks a monumental moment, as it celebrates a band whose roots with Goldenvoice stretch back to the early days of the punk scene.

Paul Tollett, president of Goldenvoice, reflects on their long history with The Misfits: “The Misfits were one of the first bands we ever promoted,” he explains. Goldenvoice, the festival's organizer, has deep roots in Los Angeles' punk rock scene, dating back to the early 1980s. Back then, the company was a small but influential concert promotion firm led by Gary Tovar, a key figure in supporting the growing LA punk movement. Tovar promoted underground bands like Black Flag and T.S.O.L., acts that many venues shied away from.

The Misfits and Goldenvoice: A Historic Partnership

The bond between Goldenvoice and The Misfits was solidified in 1983 when Tovar secured the band a headlining slot alongside Circle Jerks at a community center in Goleta, California. The gig, which was part of their promotion for the album Earth A.D., became legendary, with the band’s chaotic, energetic performance captured by several video cameras and photographers.

One of the most memorable moments of the show came when Glenn Danzig, after a particularly wild set, quipped, “We f—ed that one up,” a remark that cemented the performance’s status in punk lore. The band's shows with Goldenvoice continued, including a notable 1983 performance opening for Black Flag at the Santa Monica Civic Center.

Unfortunately, by the end of 1983, The Misfits disbanded. The band’s story, like Goldenvoice’s, was marked by change and turbulence, culminating in Tovar’s legal troubles in 1991, which led to him handing off the company to Tollett and other partners.

The Misfits' Coachella 2024 Headlining Gig

Fast forward four decades to 2024, and Goldenvoice found itself with the rare opportunity to bring The Misfits back for an unforgettable appearance at Coachella. This time, they’re headlining the Outdoor Stage on April 12 and April 19, marking their first-ever appearance at the festival. The reunion will be a highlight of Coachella’s 2024 lineup, celebrating both the band’s punk rock legacy and their significant influence on live music culture.

In addition to their headlining set, The Misfits will perform alongside a stellar lineup of punk legends at the No Values festival at LA Fairplex. The event, which sold out in minutes, will feature Suicidal Tendencies, Bad Religion, and Black Flag, making it a must-see for fans of classic punk.
